Temporary Work Abroad

The Prairie Provinces are such a bottomless pit of jobs, both in industry and in retail and service occupations like laser hair removal, that sometimes people in Saskatoon forget that they too can go somewhere else to get a job for a little while. Whether you can't find a job in Saskatoon in your field or you're just looking for a change of pace, here's some advice on finding and taking jobs in other provinces or countries.

Other Parts of Canada

If you've gotten a degree or career training certificate in computers, you may be recruited by a technology firm like Sage British Columbia for an internship. Internships are great ways to find temporary employment if you're trained, but if you're not you may have to settle for low level jobs in industry or retail. Popular stints include hotel work in resort areas like Banff, construction jobs in Toronto, and summer camp counseling in rural Ontario.

The United States

In the United States, you can find many of the same jobs in the oil industry and landscaping. Niagara Falls' border crossing point may seem easy to traverse, but if you want to work in the United States you need to apply for a work visa. You can do this at their embassy in Ottawa, any of the consulates in major cities, or online. Having American relatives or a company in America that wants to hire you is a major asset.

Other Countries

You can pick up and go work anywhere with some occupations, like videographer. Toronto's Pearson Airport's departure board is like a list of options to you. However, just as with the United States, in many countries you need a work permit. Commonwealth countries like Britain are easier to get into for Canadians, while some, like Australia, offer fixed-term working holiday permits for travelers who want to get temporary jobs. Common traveler's jobs include fruit picking, hotel work, retail sales, nanny/au pair work, unskilled industry positions, and teaching English as a second language.

What To Do With Your Saskatoon House

While you're away for six months rating wedding reception venues, Oakville dentists, or Sydney hostels for a magazine, you'll need to rent out your house unless you're leaving family members behind or you don't mind paying rent on a place you're not living in. Posting notices at work and on public bulletin boards usually does the trick, but in tougher cases you may want to consult a realtor or agency.
